Simon Batardière

Rablay-sur-Layon, Loire Valley, France

Based in Rablay-sur-Layon, Simon Batardière is a part of the younger generation of grape growing winemakers to come out of the region. His first vintage under his own label came in 2018 from his own 2ha plot of Chenin and Cabernet Franc that he farms with organic practices having previously worked with Mai & Kenji Hodgson up the road from his cellar and Vincent & Marie Tricot in the Auvergne.

His vines vary in age, some over 100 years old. In the cellar he mixes between classic direct press and whole bunch vinification alongside some clever maceration and floatation style methods, always without any additions. The wines are aged in both tank and old barrels depending on the cuvee. His wines are marked with an intense salinity that is just so quenching and shows great signs that his wines are built to age. One to watch in the future!
