Sam Vinciullo
Wadandi Boodja, Margaret River (WA), Australia
After many years of drinking his wines we are thrilled to introduce our first producer to the Mesa Wine portfolio, Sam Vinciullo. Sam’s first vintage in Margaret River, Western Australia, was in 2015 but he’s been making wine since the mid 2000’s. He has worked in the United States and Europe, including in Sicily on Mt Etna, a natural winemaking mecca where his ideas about biodiversity and organic farming solidified.
In 2017 he leased a vineyard just east of Cowaramup where he farmed 6.5 hectares of vines between 20 and 35 years old. The vines were planted to Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon on a mixture of sand, ironstone, gravel and clay soils - dry-grown without the use of herbicides or systemic chemicals...
2018/19 Cow Town Bistro
The Cow Town Bistro tells the story of an abandoned plot of Chenin Blanc, rigorous fruit selection, an unexpected extra year of élevage and some of Sam’s signature blending mastery. It’s the product of patience - often the way when making wines without any additions - and of three wines made over two years: 2018 Chenin Blanc, 2019 Chenin Blanc and 2019 Shiraz. It’s fresh, easy drinking and extremely versatile. The Bistro is best enjoyed cold, in good company, without fuss while reaching for the next bottle.
2020 Sparkling Shiraz
A gently sparkling, beautifully deep but fresh take on an Australian classic. Dark purple in the glass with chalky tannins and a lively effervescence - this wine is very very moreish.
2019 Red
A blend of 60% Shiraz and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon - the Cabernet truly shines in this wine. Very much Margaret River Cabernet but extremely expressive and without the woody influence. Very pure and a great wine for absolutely anyone!
2019 Driveway Shiraz
100% Shiraz. Another wonderful representation of this wine from Sam in 2019. The wine is rounded and giving with a lovely weight that has texture and body despite the low alcohol. Drivey natural acidity! Velvety Shiraz!
2019 Vintage Mix
(Almost) all of the grapes that Sam farmed in 2019 went into this wine - Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. This is a medium bodied red that should be served cold and allowed to warm up to temperature in the glass. Bright red fruits of cherries, sour raspberries and rhubarb. The wine has a wonderful herbaceous edge to match that beautiful fruit drive and acidity. Arguably his best rendition of this wine to date!
