Matin Calme
Belesta, Roussillon, France
Since 2006, Anthony Guix (Matin Calme) has farmed 5ha of old vines near Belesta—west of Perpignan in Roussillon. The vineyard is planted to mainly Carignan and Grenache with some Syrah and a small parcel of whites—Grenache Blanc, Gris, Macabeu and Muscat—in incredible old metamorphic soils of schist, granite and gneiss. The vineyards range in altitude between 300m and 500m above sea level, which means cooler evenings for the grapes and makes wines that are lower in alcohol than some of their lower altitude, warmer climate Roussillon counterparts.
The vineyard is certified organic and the soils are worked only by hand. The grapes are all treated very gently in the cellar and are pressed in a small horizontal press. The wines are all raised in tanks, without additions, and without pumps—just gravity. These are very terroir-driven, pure expressions of southern grapes with a lot of substance and texture, that remain fresh and easy to drink.
