Georges Comte

Émagny, Jura, France

Since 1989, Georges Comte has been making some of the most elegant and timeless wines in France.

He lives and works in the quiet village of Émagny in Doubs, a small region somewhere between Jura, Burgundy and Alsace. His eight hectares of vineyards have glorious terroir, with soils containing a perfect combination of clay and limestone — imbuing his exceptional wines with structure, texture and focused minerality.

Georges is a true artisan; a master of his very specific craft. Working in an old cellar beneath his home, he keeps true to his tried and tested way of making wine — ageing in old barrels for at least two years, hand-bottling everything, and responding to nature’s cycles. He makes everything with no filtering, no additions and absolute patience, housing bottles in his cellar until he deems them ready for drinking.

These wines have enormous character that embody what is meant by the phrase “living wine”. They shift and change with time, revealing ever-more interesting and delicious qualities. Made with real dedication and artistry, these are wines to appreciate and savour.

2004 Le Moutherot Les Pelerins

Only released from Georges cellar now — 17 years after the harvest — it’s astounding just how youthful this wine is. It’s brimming with life. It shows a beautiful concentration with taught minerality and a driving line of acidity that suggests, for those patient enough, it will age elegantly for many years to come.

2004 Le Moutherot Blanc

A unique wine that Georges made for the table, it is developed and opulent and shows all the wonderful hallmarks of aged wines from the Jura or Burgundy. Rich stone fruits, lovely salinity, and a beautiful nutty roundness.

2008 Le Moutherot Roche Bonive

This wine is in its prime. From a fantastic harvest of healthy fruit with incredible acidity and richness, it’s full and generous with a detailed minerality and is wonderfully integrated.

2014 Le Moutherot Les Pelerins

A Chardonnay from one of Georges most memorable harvests. It is incredibly powerful already in its youth showing a wonderful concentration and density. A must-drink for anyone interested in this producer’s repertoire.

2017 Le Moutherot Champ de la Pierre

Incredibly fresh and delicate and already so approachable despite being held in the cellar for a shorter time than the others. A core backbone of acidity drives the wine that is perfectly integrated and is somehow both subtle and pronounced.
